Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQ

Why mechatronics, graphic design, and photography? Seems unrelated.

Au contraire! Anyone that has ever used a piece of software understands the ease of well-designed graphical user interfaces (GUI) and the frustrations of ones that aren’t. My graphic design experience helps me to design clean, intuitive, and easy-to-use GUIs. My photography experience helps me to excel in machine vision, laser engravers, and barcoding systems since all heavily rely on imaging. Staying active in these fields helps my engineering abilities.

Where are you located?

I live in the Salt Lake City, Utah area but I don’t limit my work to just here. I love to travel! Thus, I take on work from anywhere. A majority of my work can be done remotely and then any in-person visits when necessary so long as the budget can account for those expenses.

Do you take on large projects?

Short answer; yes. Primarily, I work alone. This creates a personal relationship with the customer and helps to keep costs down. For larger projects or ones with short timelines, I may bring in others to work alongside me by hiring them from within my own personal network of contractors. I never take on a project that is out of my skill-level or will have trouble finishing. I take pride in making sure my customers are happy, even if it means directing them to someone else better suited for the job.

Do you do website design?

Unfortunately, I don’t. Although I’m very proud that I designed and created my own website, I just don’t have the experience to do it at a professional level. However, I can obviously create visual portions of your website (photos, logos, graphics, and animations). If you would like a recommendation on a web designer, let me know and I will point you to some of my personal contacts that are very good at it!

Mechatronics FAQ

What programming language do you write your software in?

It depends on the platform and customer requirements but my specialty is in VB.NET and have 5 years of experience teaching it at the college level. It is a versatile, easy-to-read, stable, and well-supported language. However, I do use other languages on a case-by-case basis. Other languages may include PLC types, VBA, Javascript, PHP, ASP.NET, and HTML.

Do you take on software-only projects?

Of course, I do! Some customers may only require a desktop application while others may want the full gamut that industrial automation has to offer. It just depends on your requirements!

Graphic Design FAQ

What kind of graphic design projects do you take on?

The list is endless. I love to experiment and learn new techniques and styles. My experience is in logo design, social media images (Facebook cover photos, Instagram posts, etc.), digital paintings, photo manipulation, print work (brochures, business cards, etc.), and more!

Do you have in-house print services?

Currently, the only printing I can do is vinyl-cutting. For any other printing, I would use an outside source and handle it for you, or I could give you the files needed so you can get it printed yourself. I can cut a single piece of vinyl up to 12”x24” and typically use Oracal 651 but others can be used upon request. Customers most commonly get single-color stickers made for their business (think silhouette logo).

Photography FAQ

What kind of photography projects do you take on?

I do almost everything! The only exception is I don't shoot weddings. They are a beast of their own and they are better left up to the photographers that focus solely on weddings. My paid work is typically in portraits, events, product, and realty. In my free time, I like to shoot landscapes and skydiving.
